What does it have to do with YOU?
Have you ever milked a cow by hand? Quite a task. It requires a comfortable, stable place to sit through the process. A three-legged stool is perfect. Easy to carry, solid and small.
It is more difficult to milk a cow using a single peg, or even with a two-legged stool. Having the proper tools makes any task easier. Milking a cow may not seem like a metaphor for what we are facing in today's world.
Bear with me.
The point is that what you are sitting on, your foundation, is critical in performing life, whether that is milking a cow, building a career, or working to change the direction of our country. Also, valuable is having the proper tools and instructions to get the job done.
I just watched a video that spoke about depression as a result of personal sense that something is wrong in the system. System leaving individuals fearful, uncertain and vulnerable. You have read about those who become huge successes and deal with depression. Or those who do all that is required to amass lots of money, only to be unfulfilled. I think there is value in that recognition. What we are doing or what our culture tells us is "the thing" to do may be part of our hopelessness.
I know that a "three-legged stool" is not a simple answer to all of lives challenges. And yet, how much of life are you doing with a "one-pegged stool" approach?
Try out the concept of paradoxes, a situation or action having seemingly contradictory qualities. For example, taking care of others and taking care of self. Working to change the world and keeping your personal space/home stable.
Paradoxes are all around us and we often don't recognize their contrary flows. We are torn back and forth without conscious participation. What I have learned from oppositions in the study of astrology is that both points have value. It is up to you, the individual to learn how they bring benefit. Too often, we are looking for the "magic key", the "one fix", building our life on a "one-legged stool."
Life also requires stability, ease, a degree of comfort, especially when we take on new projects and work to complete tasks. Life also requires lots of tools, open minds, and the willingness to try new ideas.
Follow me in this newsletter to understand a paradox/opposition using the "three-legged stool" in the area of career.
This is what a "one-legged" approach would look like.
Leg one: Taking action. You want to change or expand your career. You are smart enough to know that you don't have all of the answers and so you do your research and hire a great Career Coach. This coach focuses on various physical evaluations, methods, actions steps to make your career happen. S/he encourages courage, tenacity, push through and make it happen attitude. Nothing wrong with that. It is one leg, a very physical action oriented leg.
What is often missing is the awareness of the two other legs in building a strong career.
Leg two would be skill building to address any inner, unseen patterns, i.e. sabotage, fear, doubt, old trauma, genetic patterns, etc. When these come us, the physical approach would say to just push through or sit on your hands until the inner urge passes.
Leg three is the mid-point between the "opposites." This is the place of Being, the space of Still-point and deepens your process.
Let's look at a "three-legged stool" in the area of social justice and activism.
How can you use the three legs?
With all that is before us every day in the news, applying the "Three-legged Stool" model will serve you well. Each leg is valuable in the movements toward change. Sometimes you will feel called to 'march'. Other times you will add processes to 'heal'. And in those times of simply Being Still, you will deepen yourself and therefore you impact. You can explore more about this model as it applies to areas of life.
When you go to the LINK about this concept, add your questions, comments and resources. Collaboration is most powerful during this times.
